About

Gillian Tan

Hello! I'm Gillian Tan, a video and lighting designer.

I was born in Singapore and am of Peranakan descent. I travel between my home bases in London and Singapore, but can also be found roaming wherever there is interesting work.

I specialise in theatrical, immersive and interactive experiences, working with companies that are game changers and innovators — who are not afraid to take risks with technology and creative ideas. My interests are in exploring and pushing the boundaries of what the entertainment industry can bring to audiences in the 21st century.

I was a recipient of the 2022 Summer Unreal Engine Storytelling Fellowship, and formerly Head of Video at RADA from 2020–2023.

Rising Waves is a one-to-one mentorship programme for British East and Southeast Asian people entering the performing arts. It exists because representation isn't just about who's on stage — it's about who's in the room making the decisions.

The scheme matches emerging ESEA practitioners with established industry mentors across lighting, video, sound, directing, producing, and more. Each pairing is tailored, practical, and long-term.

I also produce when connected with like-minded independent artists, makers and performers. My interests are in art+technology and developing work that explores new ideas in theatre for the future generations of audiences and artists.

I studied Arts Administration and Cultural Policy at Goldsmiths.
